The History of Snake: From Arcade Classic to My Mobile Game Journey

For decades, Snake has remained one of the most recognizable and beloved video games ever created. Its simple concept—control a snake, eat food, grow longer, and avoid crashing—has entertained millions of players around the world. Even today, new versions continue to appear on mobile devices, computers, and gaming consoles.

This project marks the beginning of my own journey to build a modern Snake game for mobile devices using the Godot Engine.

Where It All Began

The idea behind Snake dates back to the late 1970s with arcade games such as Blockade, where players controlled growing lines while trying to avoid collisions. The gameplay was simple, but it quickly became addictive because every piece of food increased the challenge.

As technology evolved, Snake appeared on home computers and early gaming systems, introducing the game to even more players.

The Nokia Revolution

Snake became a worldwide phenomenon in 1997 when it was included on Nokia mobile phones. Millions of people experienced the game for the first time on devices like the Nokia 6110.

Unlike many games of its time, Snake required no internet connection, no complicated controls, and only a few minutes to enjoy. Players of all ages competed with themselves to achieve higher scores, making it one of the most played mobile games in history.

For many people, Snake was their first mobile gaming experience.

Why Snake Is Still Popular

Although the gaming industry has changed dramatically, Snake remains relevant because its gameplay is timeless.

Its popularity comes from several strengths:

  • Easy to understand in seconds

  • Quick and satisfying gameplay

  • Increasing difficulty as the snake grows

  • High replay value

  • Perfect for short gaming sessions

Great game design doesn't always require complex graphics or large worlds. Sometimes, a simple idea executed well can stand the test of time.

Why I'm Building My Own Version

As an indie game developer, I wanted to start with a game that has a rich history while adding modern improvements for today's players.

My goal is not simply to recreate the classic Snake game. Instead, I want to create a polished mobile experience with smooth controls, attractive visuals, and features that make the game enjoyable on modern smartphones.

This project also gives me the opportunity to improve my skills in game programming, user interface design, animation, optimization, and mobile publishing using the Godot Engine.

Planned Features

The first version of the game will focus on delivering a fun and responsive experience. Planned features include:

  • Smooth touch controls

  • Multiple game themes

  • Unlockable snake skins

  • Leaderboards and achievements

  • Daily rewards

  • Offline gameplay

  • Clean and modern user interface

  • Mobile-friendly performance

As development continues, I also plan to explore additional game modes and new gameplay ideas while keeping the classic spirit of Snake alive.

Following the Journey

This blog will document every stage of development—from the first line of code to the final published game.

I'll share development updates, design decisions, challenges, improvements, and milestones along the way. My hope is that readers can follow the entire journey of creating a mobile game from scratch.

Whether you're a fellow developer, a gamer, or simply curious about how games are made, I invite you to join me as this project grows.

Thank you for visiting TechnoChiya. This is only the beginning, and I'm excited to share the journey ahead.
